The game was based upon the successful TV series, Robin Hood, starring Richard Greene. 143 episodes were produced between 1955 and 1959. The programme's theme song is still sung by Nottingham Forest fans at every home football game. The original theme sung by Dick Calvert was a chart hit in 1956.

The series was filmed in Black and White, the illustrations for the cards are coloured re-workings of scenes from the programme.

Ariel also produced a Robin Hood Snap game in 1955, World of Playing cards have a feature by Rex Pitts that features all the Ariel card games.
